Layout and Set Dressing - Twin Islands

You will find below the work I've done for Twin Islands. From the Storyboard to the Final Layout, I was in charge of making all of our initial ideas come to life as much as possible. I was also in charge of the technical aspect of the layout, such as preparing the scenes for the next steps, optimization and in general, keeping them light for animation and lighting.

The main challenge was knowing when to make a perfect symmetry and when to break it without breaking it ''too much'' to vary the angles of view and also keeping it constant with the high amount of props spread in all the shots.

This movie was more challenging given the very small budget (around 2millions £ and 25 people) but we did try to make the layout work as best as we can in the time given to us.

For this movie I was in charge of creating the scenes and often a mock-up modelling and camera so the lead layout artist could start the animation previs. I would follow his directives concerning the shots and angles he was thinking about and create an environment in which he could start working and finalising the cameras.

My other task was more of a technical aspect, such as cleaning all unecessary elements, assets and optimizing the heaviness of the scene so the animators could work smoothly.

Given our very small team I also ended up being the main Set Dressing artist. I was in charge of knowing everything, every asset, every piece of environment was supposed to be and placing them together so I could create a somewhat believable environment (We didn't have the budget for a crowd artist or for doing this full time which was another problem to tackle). We were working without clear reference (no art department and no art director) so it was a bit challenging sometimes.

I learnt a lot for this production and I sometimes regret our lack of budget because I do think we had a good team capable of doing great things !
